Father and son duo Mercurius, based in Morpeth in England, just released their third full-length album Maybe You and I. The act has been steadily developing their sound and fanbase ever since their first singles back in 2021, and how it seems like they fully arrived once and for all. On their latest effort Mercurius creates an electrifying atmosphere of oldschool-inspired soft rock filled with strings, riffs and incredible textures.
Maybe You and I dive into complicated themes of heartbreak, old age, death, and suicide, but somehow its unique sound manages to sound light-hearted and catchy. The storytelling angle is a very clear one, as the band weaves fictional stories with remarkable, rich detail; perhaps the finest example being “Fickle World”. The aching ballad follows an increasingly complex tale of heartbreak and betrayal before ultimately finding its own version of a happy ending with beautiful violins and gentle guitars.
On any Mercurius song their dynamics and synergy are palpable every step of the way, making the best use of their intimate familial bonds that appear to create a trusting and flourishing environment in which their melodies and songs soar. On their new record the duo really turned up the drama with gorgeous harmonies, guitar riffs that range from urgent to delicate and excellent vocal performances from lead singer James.

Led by a wonderful sense of experimentation, the band crafted its sound while in the recording studio giving it a spacious feel of endless possibility. Taking inspiration from 80s rock classics like U2 and Simple Minds, Mercurius navigates through uplifting melodies that cut through the darkness of some of its themes in precise and careful ways. They know how to hold the weight of their lyrics at the same time that balance it all with impeccable hooks and infeccious delivery, making it an incredibly deep listening experience – like on “Our Enemy”.
The duo also knows how to slow things down beautifully with country-tinged ballads that let their softer side shine oh so bright. “Great Evil Love” offers a soothing atmosphere with gorgeous backing vocals from Shelley and intricate compositions that feel like basking in the sun. Maybe You and I is a surprising listen that unfolds with a wide variety of rhythms, sounds and references while still sounding very original and creative. It’s a never-ending roller coaster of riffs and atmospheres that makes a thrilling ride from start to finish.
