This summer, Winchester 7 released his newest bigger body of work, an EP titled “Postcards”. Dedicated to moments in life that remain in memory like postcards honoring a special time, the whimsical, truthful and warm release looks back on these times with gratitude and softness and forms the memories into vibrant indie rock postcards.

There is a saying that goes “Don’t cry it’s over, be happy it happened,” and the EP is an embodiment of this quote. Some of the postcards in this release contain times of hurt, but they still remain foundational moments in time, breathing new meaning and experience to one’s current day.
In fact, “Postcards” starts off with one of such times, which involved love. “Just a Crush”, the demo of which was created by the artist and his daughter years ago, features hazy guitars and elevated vocals reflecting on the highs and lows of a romantic relationship. Though it ended with broken hearts, the song remains high-spirited and nostalgic for the happy times the love brought back then.

Warm feelings also flood the next, summery track “Still Waters”, basking in the shiny summer sky and longing for the loved person to be present. More uplifting melodies are present in “Ride That Pony”, as playful thoughts dance with fuzzy textured guitar riffs. It’s dancy, joyful and charming in all the best ways and perfect for careless summer days.
“Holiday” holds a more melancholic place on the record. A gaze looks for relief on the horizon, while its owner is feeling increasingly ruffled and tired of the endless busy days with no end in sight. The EP ends with a cover of “You Again” by The Lottery Winners, giving their nostalgic lovesick song a sweet summery twist. The hope for love returning still stays the same.
A collection of fleeting memories from the past now in aural form of postcards, the EP is like a summertime afternoon spent in the vein of nostalgia. Happiness, regret, longing, and more take residence in the melodies of the EP, offering plenty of reflection as well as filling the space with a great, charming indie rock sound.
