English electropop artist and producer Luke Michael Kane continues to run strong on the campaign for his upcoming album Psychedelika Pt. 1 due to late november. Shortly after the comprehensive EP Causing A Commotion the singer is already back with a brand new single “I Don’t Need to Say”, the latest installment of his solo project The New Citizen Kane.
A spiritual successor of his hit single “Forget the World” from The Tales of Morpheus in January, “I Don’t Need to Say” is a glistening synthpop track that glides with infeccious melodies and soothing atmosphere. Kane’s approach to pop production comes from a very comforting place of familiarity, employing lush soundscapes that seamlessly blend lo-fi charm with polished and maximalist beats. “I Don’t Need to Say” also builds up on the same thoughtful lyricism and emotional delivery that pours out of every one of his tracks.
“This song is about what happens when the fire of early love evolves into something deeper”, Kane comments on the tracks as he sings about feelings of honesty and intimacy beyond the surface level of attraction. His commitment to the act of staying is enlightened by the lovely routine that naturally forms around when things are going great. “Nothing’s ever felt so natural to me“, he sings at the end of the chorus in one of the most genuine portrayals of New Relationship Energy to appear in a pop song this year.
The cascading of synth waves create an aura of belonging that perfectly captures the excitement and newness of the situation, without it ever feeling shallow or uninspired. “I Don’t Need to Say” is constructed as an introspective reflection on his own feelings, capturing the moment in which the decision to stay is made – perhaps not even communicated yet to the other person, but when you know you know. This is illustrated by the music video as well, showing Kane himself alone dancing around in very vulnerable but comforting situations – like being shirtless in front of a mirror, or facial close ups that highlight the lyrics.
In a time in which the biggest stars are putting out their blandest works, an artist like Kane feels even more refreshing and intriguing. “I Don’t Need to Say” is a pop song about feeling good with an atmosphere that is inviting as if he’s here to share these emotions and pull you in instead of rubbing them in your face. This is the kind of single that shows artistic and personal growth aligned with catchy dancefloor-ready anthems that still feel soft and gentle, making falling in love feel bright and airy and as light as it always should.
This contrasts beautifully with his next upcoming single “Eyes Wide Shut”, scheduled to be released later at the end of October. It’s a song that touches on the denials and illusions that can also come from feelings of love in a way that don’t negate the bubbly happiness of “I Don’t Need to Say”, handling everything with impeccable taste and empathy. There is darker tone on this one in both production and lyrics, exploring the nuance of attraction and uncertainty with equally poignant delivery.
“It’s about the lies we accept, the fire we play with, and the blindness we choose when desire clouds judgment”, Kane says about “Eyes Wide Shut” as he compares love to an addiction or something that should be experienced with careful caution. Both conflicting sentiments can coexist and they often do at the beginnings, and Kane navigates through them with a sensibility that is as touching as it is fragile. From what we’ve heard so far, Psychedelika Pt. 1 is bound to be his finest and most complex work yet and we can’t wait for the full album.
