Led by artist Jean-Phillipe Bajata, French new wave pop project Baaj & Baaj is back with brand new single “There’s No Reason”. The title track from the latest EP finds the musician diving into the 80s synthpop sound and emulating the same sharp yet soft angles and colourful melodies of the era it’s inspired by, coming up with an anachronistic and familiar atmosphere. It’s an infeccious study on positivity with excellent influences that range from french house to new wave in exciting and ecstatic dynamics.

The track draws heavily from the sugary, yet acid-pop style made famous by Simple Minds and Talk Talk, with notable influences from Depeche Mode’s Speak & Spell creativity, and finds Baaj & Baaj at his most optimistic. He expands upon the cinematic rhythms found in “Echoes in the Mind” (also present on the EP as track two) with the sovereignty and admiration of someone who deeply appreciates and respects the 80s musical scene, marrying its vibrancy with introspective lyrics and reflections.

Channelling both the alternative rock delivery of Bono as well as the surrealist approach of Boy George, “There’s No Reason” stands as an experience on its own – and he’s here to make sure that it’s a good experience. It’s as hypnotic as it is rich in textures, offering an oversaturated but delicate landscape that is as passionate as its confrontational lyricism. “‘There’s No Reason’ is a cry of lucidity and rebellion”, he says before commenting on how the song questions obedience, manipulation and freedom.

“There’s No Reason” is flamboyant in its delivery and expertly paced in its production, crafting an energetic track that circles around piano chords and electronic nostalgia. It also gives Baaj the room to explore the jazz influences he was brought up on, giving the track the lovely feeling of controlled improvisation and novelty. The new EP, as Baaj comments, was conceived as an “antidote to gloom” and finds the musician at his most electrifying as he bends melodies and soundscapes to his will in order to create something that leaves you with a sincere smile.

It’s an explosive track filled with kinetic energy and powerful melodies that swirl and bounce around its own groove with confidence and admiration for the past. “There’s No Reason” glistens as the kind of alternative pop today’s modern scene is severly lacking – making Baaj & Baaj stand out as a force to be reckoned with once and for all.
