Although… as they look up to the shadow cast by the abuser, is it against their will anymore?

This eery song starts off with a reinterpretation of a chorus from an old blues-folk tune “Down in the Valley”. While the original song of a lovestruck heart is wrapped in nostalgia and warmth, the verses sung by the hollowed-out are ghastly and quick to make it clear that this is not a happy place to be at all. But, for some unlucky people, it’s the only thing they know.
A distinctly humid atmosphere sets in, reminiscent of a cellar unit, with a damp smell and little items, like a flower in a vase, that are supposed to evoke care. Exzenya’s voice plays the role of a fleeting sanity of the captured person living in complete control. A quivering voice, along with intermittent bursts of melody, drives home the chaotic state of mind, where the captor has also become the hero and the abuse a rightful deed.
So, if or when an opportunity to escape arrives, would the captured person use the chance or decide to stay with the captor? Despite the hurt and removal of autonomy, the abuser definitely must have the best intentions, and the musty dark comfort feels safer than the unknown outside world, where nobody makes choices for them.
The artist keeps growing as an indie artist with a knack for genre-fluid sound with a cinematic touch. Her newest release shows both her vocal strengths as well as an ability to turn dark and highly uncomfortable themes into songs, that offer a deep, truthful look into the topic at hand. Whether it’s the abused person falling into a trusting relationship with their captor, or the accidental drunk texting incident, that was turned into the debut song “Drunk Texting”, this female rising star has a lot to offer as a rising artist.
