Prolific indie rock duo The Pulltops are back with the latest installment of their string of great singles, “Unbroken”. A song inspired by 90s power pop and filled with dramatic dynamics, the new single comes to show how the Milwaukee band keeps on evolving their sound and adding new textures to it. Shortly after the epic “Rise or Fall“, the sense of scale of “Unbroken” feels very different and tightly measured, avoiding excesses while still employing a myriad of interesting influences from the likes of Teenage Fanclub as well as Genesis.

The song serves as a continuation of the experiments they’ve been doing all throughout the year over the past singles, culminating in groovy rhythms and incredible pacing. A self-described anthem of endurance, on “Unbroken” the duo stretches their sound across multigenres that blend heartfelt americana and prog rock cinematics, all with an unwavering energy of positivity. It’s a very uplifting track from its familiar guitar riffs to the power of the vocal performance, highlighting The Pulltop’s keen eye for composition and layering.
Their constant push and pull between restraint and release make the track feel incredibly captivating, offering simple straightforward alternative rock only to go somewhere entirely new and then go back as if nothing happened. It’s a testament on how to try out new ideas in excellent ways, knowing exactly how to expand their boundaries while still sounding like themselves at every turn. By scaling down a bit and merging the big ideas of “Rise or Fall” with a more subtle and comforting approach the band created a dynamic rollout that feels like watching a movie.

There’s drama, conflict, and resolution in the instrumentals alone as they play around and oscillate between fast-paced verses and a slowed-down chorus. “Unbroken” speaks of resilience and renewal in a way that feels authentic, organic, and, most importantly, realistic and achievable.
There are no hints of the vaguely motivational ‘you can do it, just believe in yourself!’ self-help rhetoric; instead, the band makes sure to capture the entire journey towards hope without skipping over the hard parts. This brings “Unbroken” closer to the audience and turns it into a track that actually leaves you inspired to try your best. “Unbroken” is one of their most emotionally deep and evocative songs so far, a true highlight of their impressive discography that gets better with each listen.
