Based in Mons, Belgium, pianist and electronic music composer Jean-Philippe Ruelle is back with electrifying new single “Compulsein”. Following on the footsteps of great new wave and krautrock legends that range from DEVO and Kraftwerk to modern acts like Röyksopp, “Compulsein” is an amusing and immersive listening experience. His new single finds the artist walking through a drastically different route than the calming “Switeemind“, betting on energetic beats and richly layered textures that feels unlike anything he’s done before.

“You have no idea how much fun I had making this track”, he says, and such fun is palpable throughout the song. “Compulsein” shows Ruelle stepping a bit away from the introspective ambient stylings of his latest compositions and really diving in, headfirst, towards pulsating beats and dramatic vocalizations. The instrumental composition is as thrilling and adventurous as it is engaging, highlighting his ability to portray true, genuine emotions without a single word spoken.

“Compulsein” incorporates elements of upbeat synthpop, classic psychedelia and 80s electronics with remarkable touches of modernity infused deeply into them. It’s a deeply compelling track that has a charming sci-fi quality to it as the keys swirl around synthetic strings and uplifting arpeggios, providing the song an intrinsic sense of movement as well as capturing a slight eeriness of perfectly crafted dissonance. It unfolds with cinematic dangerousness like the soundtrack to a fast-paced and climactic scene that leaves you out of breath once it’s done.

The way Jean-Philippe Ruelle manages to add so much personality and joy to his music is incredibly admirable, and this is no different on his latest single. It’s a moving and creative journey that feels fulfilling and electric with remarkable sounds coming from all directions, culminating in evocative melodies that build tension just as rapidly as they offer a cathartic release. “Compulsein” is a relentless and dynamic song that goes with unwavering determination, and it’s an absolute joy from start to finish. Yes, Jean-Philippe, we can definitely imagine how fun it was making this track because it shows on how much of a blast it is to listen to it.
