Pennan Brae delivers a moving tribute to classic rock on new album “Paint”

Pennan Brae Artwork Paint

Vancouver-based musician PennaN Brae teamed up with legendary drummer Steve Ferrone and producer Kaj Falch-Nielsen to make his new studio album Paint, a self-described “seven-song rock release”. Taking influences from classic rock styles of the 70s and 80s, Pennan dives into an atmospheric maximalism either by emulating icons The Rolling Stones or by adding country into the mix with the same unwavering dedication. Paint also shows a very interesting display of both power pop as well as funk rock elements that are spread throughout the work, creating a sense of cohesion that ties the sound together beautifully.

The prolific songwriter has a long discography since 2008, featuring his original music both as proper authoral albums as well as soundtracks, and show how diverse his soundscape can be. On Paint the canadian artist feels incredibly at home, channelling his personal heroes and coming up with songs that are catchy and fun that also take themselves very seriously – as heard before on his album Arcade. His commitment is what makes Paint such a thrilling listen, highlighting Pennan’s ability of going from politically-charged harshness to sentimental americana in a single cinematic move.

Fueled by delightful melodies that range from old-school musings to comforting chamber-pop inspirations, Paint finds Pennan flexing his songwriting in a myriad of different directions. “Take Me Back” rolls out like a Belle and Sebastian track, “Do You What You Do” is an explosion of riffs and keys with magnetic allure, and standout track “Say That You Will But You Won’t” sees him glide through power pop with Americana guitars and astonishing ease.

Paint is a record that entrances you with how intricately uplifting it actually is. Guided by Ferrone’s unmistakable beats as if backed The Heartbreakers himself, Pennan’s musical landscape is rich and moving. There is a loving sense of intimacy across the record that shines through even its most expansive moments, crafting a safe space for exploration that feels absolutely freeing.

By taking on more complex choices and having the production sound fuller, Paint stands as a bold yet natural step for Pennan. His undying love for 70s and 80s music is in full bloom here, and the result is an album that sounds like a dream come true – for Pennan, but also for all of us who get to enjoy it.
