A few weeks ago, folk-rock group Steel & Velvet revealed the first glimpse into the life of a character named Joshua with a song “Orphan’s Lament”. Alongside painting a vivid image of life spent in solace and finally coming across unlikely happiness, Steel & Velvet also said this will be part of a bigger story involving the reclusive man and the girl he found in the woods. The bigger story is now here in the form of “People Just Float” EP.

This release, a carefully curated collection of songs given a distinct new facet by the band, follows an emotionally impactful storyline of loneliness, love, affection, grief, and consolation. The resonant voice of Johann Le Roux becomes that narrator, whose presence adds weight to the scenery, meaning to the otherwise overlooked details, and explanation to often too complicated and fleeting moments.
Original songs were performed by a wide variety of artists from David Lynch and Pixies, to Nirvana and Johnny Cash. Through the lens of Steel & Velvet, they have been transformed into lonely, exposed folk songs where the solitude surrounds the voice and gentle, skilled guitar play. One can imagine a secluded cabin with nothing but nature surrounding it for miles, and the life spent far away.
The story, which started off with “Orphan’s Lament”, continues with Joshua and the woman enjoying each other’s company in the little cabin. “Ring of Fire” creates a charming, flowing atmosphere with love in the air and a whole new visual on life. Something chaotic and frightened lives in the shadows though for the man, who despite longing for connection is used to living in seclusion.
As the story goes on, the next songs witness the inner chaos unravel. “Silver” strikes long echoing notes of sorrow with the duet sung by Johann Le Roux and his daughter Jade. “Lake of Fire” is one of determination and, ultimately, self-destruction through a haze of confusion, which leads to poignant, calm ending song “In Heaven”, sung by Jade on her own.
Joshua’s story with the mystery woman has also been turned into a beautiful short film by Loïc Moyou. Each song has its own part in the movie, and the emotions are raw and exposed to the point the viewer can feel them quite acutely. The movie is released in parts, and next chapter belonging to “Ring of Fire” will be revealed on November 7th.
Steel & Velvet have mastered a timeless sound, which is drenched in emotions and highly successful at making the listener feel the atmosphere in which the events take place.
