Martin Lloyd Howard, an England-based guitar virtuoso, reveals his newest instrumental piece written for solo guitar. The title “Selene” comes from the Greek goddess of the moon, and aptly so, as the piece was inspired by his wife’s magical painting of a moonlit sea.
The moon has been a source of serenity and magic since the beginning of time, and its pale glow keeps spreading that sense of tranquility even today. Martin Lloyd Howard has captured the moon’s silent presence and the way it lights up the nighttime in the notes played in this piece. There’s adoration and romance present in the melodies, as much as there’s mystery.

In this piece, Howard’s gaze is on the pale full moon, occasionally crossed by clouds with their edges lit by the moon as they float by. It’s a calming, yet oddly mesmerizing sight to observe, and this calmness flows around the played notes like the slowly moving clouds.
The romantic shimmer present in this piece was brought on by Howard’s 50 years old classical guitar, a beautiful hand-built instrument. Moon’s inherent magic is faithfully shown through the piece’s signature, G minor, which is a less-used signature when it comes to classical guitar, but fully at home when depicting something as mysterious and beautiful as a moonlit land.
“Selene” is the newest addition to Martin Lloyd Howard’s works on solo guitar, but the skilled instrumentalist is also fully at home at ensemble works and collaborations. Originally classically trained, Howard has expanded his repertoire into blues, folk and rock, and he is excellent at evoking detailed imagery with his music.
