After a remarkable run of singles that started with “ADHD” in April 2024, american five-piece post-hardcore band Bury the Pines unleashes their full-length debut Industry Plant. The record came to life organically and with little ambition, the band themselves say that they originally set out to record an EP that ended up growing into a proper full album – but you wouldn’t be able to tell that from the music itself. Industry Plant is a glorious illustration of a band at their creative peak, hopping from pop punk and emo to hardcore and progressive rock with incredible ease and, well, ambition.

A record filled to the brim with so many dynamic changes of pace and direction, Industry Plant is as urgent as it is approachable. The Cleveland-based act comments on how much their sound is an amalgamation of every single one of its contributors: “Every person in the band has their own different influences, which makes for a very dynamic mix when it all comes together”. This adds so much depth to the record, you’re able to lose yourself for hours in its detailed and intricate production choices – matched only by the catchy melodies and heartfelt lyricism.

There’s a joyfulness that permeates the record even at their most escapist or defiant moments, like on single “Pardon My French“. Probably their most experimental yet accessible and radio-friendly track, it’s a confrontational track that explores self-reflections about overcoming frustrations and rummaging through – starting out as a ballad and ending with a saxophone solo. It’s a wild journey in which Bury the Pines assume the role of a guide as they lead you through so many places only to come out victorious on the other side.
They’re unafraid to touch on vulnerable moments of love and insecurities as well, like on “Destiny” or the infatuation-as-a-drug metaphor of highlight “Jade Shadow”, a track featuring contributions from Sam of the band Stay Gone. The record is a melodic and energetic journey of heartbreak, escapism, and philosophical musings feeling alive and breathing at every chord change. Industry Plant is an adventurous record that dares to be as bold, heavy and poppy as it needs to be.
Adding references to screamo, post-rock, classic hardcore, and Midwest emo via angular and crisp guitars, Bury the Pines crafted an album that feels like a mission statement: this is all we can do, and we’ll do it all at once. Channelling the shredded guitars of Marissa Paternoster and J. Clark with the same lyrical clarity as Jimmy Eat World, the American band made a thrilling and inviting record that leaves you breathless, even if you don’t move an inch as you listen to it.
