Andy Smythe reaches utopia while reflecting on real struggles on new single “Leviathan”

After much acclaim on previous singles and, especially, on his record Poetry in Exile, British singer and songwriter Andy Smythe unveils “Leviathan”. His new track, taken from upcoming album Quiet Revolution, finds Andy reflecting on lovecraftian figures and their role in shaping and regulating societies throughout human history. Even more interesting is the atmosphere and structure of the song, taking a light and upbeat approach to such an intense and thoughtful theme.

Over uplifting production that includes orchestrations, horn sections and several layers of vocal melodies, “Leviathan” is an intriguing expansion of Andy’s usual britpop leanings. It’s a refreshing new kind of alternative folk for the artist, highlighting his versatility and enhancing the storytelling through new dynamics that hadn’t yet been fully explored by Andy before. There’s even a nostalgic harmonica solo towards the end and it feels completely earned by the time we get there.

“Leviathan” shows Andy playing around and having fun with sounds and melodies, translating the urgency of his lyrical reflections into not-obvious territories. The track disguises brutal critiques of modern society in happy and warm melodies, while subtly delving into metaphors that equate leviathan figures with real-world entities, such as the UN and its diminishing ability to provide much-needed help to those in need. Such realization hits you quietly and without any aggression, making the track feel more like a personal rant than a call for action.

But things aren’t exceedingly grim on “Leviathan”; the track offers a hopeful tone and eventually reaches utopic scenarios in which those problems are solved. “‘Leviathan’ is a song about a possible future Utopia where advanced AI may be able to resolve conflicts and distribute global resources fairly and manage issues such as climate change”, the artist says. The song feels like a journey that starts in desolation, goes through tribulations, and ends in peace – and it does everything with incredible elegance and intricacy, making remarkable use of Andy’s signature light-heartedness.

The track finds a refreshing balance between thoughts of darkness and feelings of hopefulness. It’s his ‘glass-half-full’ approach to the story that turns it into a welcoming and fun song, offering new perspectives sonically and lyrically while establishing Andy Smythe once more as teller of complex and universal tales.
