Canadian singer-songwriter Foxy Leopard is welcoming new listeners into the imagined yet extremely real war-torn world. The most recent single of his, “I Haven’t Seen Enough”, differs slightly as the poignant, reflective song goes back to the time of Before, the calm before the storm, a narrative that sees the darkness forming in horizon, yet remains calm, waiting and hopeful.
That era, an echoing calm time when nothing had been torn up yet, is narrated by a new character in Foxy Leopard’s world, a young woman named Clarabelle. Watchful yet inexperienced, she does not know what war is as of yet and thus represents the souls not yet tarnished by the fear and hatred brought on by war, and for whom future still felt free and bright.
And thus, the song reflects that feeling of purity and innocence through slow-paced acoustic folk, where the guitar tones the atmosphere with tangible tension, as all eyes are on those strange men that appeared out of nowhere. The bubbling youth of Clarabelle’s kind is represented in her soulful, raspy exclamations, which also represent the unease brought on by the unusual folk spilling whisky, their intentions unknown.

When Foxy Leopard’s previous album “War & Peace” explored themes of war and its haunting aftermath long after the blood spill and looting is over, Clarabelle’s debut is a shift in the theme as she speaks about life as it was before the terror. Similarly, Foxy Leopard’s upcoming album expands on that calm life of anticipation and only small worries, where fear and dread haven’t yet found a place to be. The album will be named “Before”.
Foxy Leopard, a project based in Quebec, Canada, is named after an imagined entity. Telling stories of the past still casting haunting shadows in the now, the project lifts the settled dust from what happened in the past during and after the American Civil War with its aftermath shaping the present. Now, the project goes even further back to show stories of local people yet to be affected, and will do so through cinematic, impactful folk with captivating vocals and poetic songwriting.
