9 O’Clock Nasty, the audacious trailblazers from Leicester, unleash their new album “Chaos”. True to its biting title, Chaos is a raw, unapologetic manifesto of our turbulent times. Hip-Hop, Electronica, Cynicism, Authenticity—it’s a wicked cocktail of sounds. The unruly offspring of the Beastie Boys are back, and there’s no escape from their relentless energy. Dive in and absorb the chaos.
ORDER “CHAOS” ON BANDCAMP NOW!
Few bands have clung to existence long enough to morph into both heroes and villains. 9 O’Clock Nasty shines like a blazing beacon amidst the murky waters of superficial, egotistic, and greed-driven music. No other band dares to unleash their thoughts with such ferocity, a raw consciousness that ruthlessly exposes our own hypocrisy and blunders. Neither demons nor saints, the Nasty are an unyielding force reveling in chaos and seductive beats, challenging the status quo with every pulse.

Q & A
You’ve somehow managed to cling to your roots amidst six tumultuous years. But let’s be real—has that been a walk in the park, or have you wrestled with the gnarly beast of the “music industry” while trying to craft fresh sounds?
We have the wonderful advantage of not caring about “success” in any measurable way. We’re driven to do what we do, which is all about writing songs, saying what we need to say and the friendships we make along the way. If we were hopeful artists expecting a career we’d probably have exploded a while back.
Honestly, punk is dead, the music industry is dead. All that is gone. What we have now is different, we don’t have a name for it. The ways artists can reach people have massively increased. The ways their work can be bought and sold without fair payment have grown at the same pace. The music industry was always a bear pit at whatever level you worked at.
Your lyrics pulse with a fierce political and social edge—who fuels these radical ideas, and what does your writing process look like? It seems like the chaotic state of the world serves as a relentless muse, doesn’t it?
It’s collaborative. Very little of what we do is a single vision. We will talk and ideas and phrases will drop out and get noted down. One of us will write a few lines with a meaning for them. Another will pick that up and interpret it how they like. Add more. In that way a song can be “about” two or three things. Sometimes very personal things, sometimes comments on the world. So, a song can be a breakup song, and a song about not trusting politicians who get elected and then lie. Both can be true. When someone listens to it, they take their own meaning from it too. That’s how it should be.
The world is a relentless mess of stupidity and yes, it pretty much writes a song for us every few weeks.
In Chaos, you unleash two tracks (like Beast) that showcase a drumming performance unlike anything we’ve ever heard before. Are we looking at the same maestro behind the kit? And can we dare to hope for more of these jaw-dropping displays in the future?
Very little of what you hear in the records is a live performance. Drums are either programmed, very carefully (we love beats) or are three or four loops spliced together. We work hard to vary and combine loops so that you get the emphasis and the pauses you’d get from a live drummer. “Sonic” for example, which is a drum track we’re especially proud of, was a metal drum loop spliced in with an old funk drum pattern which Ted made, overlaid with some programmed drums Pete did to build the dynamics at the right points, with live percussion from Sydd to give it the feel of being “in the room.” Layer upon layer.
Same with guitar. Pete will play three or four electric and acoustic guitar tracks, but they will then be edited and spliced down to the final version.
That may sound very over-complex. It probably is, but it’s what we love. The craft of building a song. In truth, we’ve all worked in rehearsal rooms writing songs with a live band, and found that much more slow and frustrating. Our approach involves a lot of talking, a lot of collaboration and sweating details.
Tell me about your live shows. How do you manage to transfer the studio versions into a live environment. How do people respond?
That has been a journey. We tried working with Sydd on live drums and a backing track and that was cumbersome and hard work. Recently we’ve worked with live vocals and a backing track which is easy and allows us to play almost any venue with minimal hassle, so we can focus entirely on the performance and having fun. We have plans to mix it up a bit and combine live vocals with triggers and samples.
We get a good reaction. We’re a good “live band” in the sense that we do our job professionally, we put a lot of energy into it and people react positively. We’ve had audiences dancing and shouting, and we’ve had rooms where some people had no idea what was going on and were a little perplexed. Trying to win over a crowd that maybe were expecting a standard punk band is a fun challenge.
Lastly, we’re living in a tumultuous era rife with chaos, madness, and violence. Will this ignite a fire of even more provocative music that resonates with the chaos of our times, or will you simply turn your back on these themes and choose your own sources of inspiration? Can we anticipate even more of that classic 9 O’Clock Nasty energy in the future, or are we perhaps in for a deeply personal twist?
We’re already well into the next “thing.” It’s a deliberate change of style. We’ve had three records where we’ve carefully build a method and a sound and now it’s time to mess it up. Expect something much more live and angry, much more raw. The working title is “The Dirty South” (we know where that place is, but everyone is free to decide the location for themselves!) and the rage will unleash this summer. We might change way we release too. Rather than singles and then an album, we’re considering a series of EPs, but that is a decision to make after Chaos is out in the wild!
The absolute best thing about this band is the feeling after we’ve just made something we absolutely love and the anticipation of planning when to release it. There are songs in the new project called that are probably the pieces of music I’m most excited about in the last ten years. Working with friends to make things like that is why we do what we do.
