Scarlet Mill returns with introspective new single “Pharisee”, several months after their glam rock trip on “She Waits“. This time around the Dutch duo was inspired by a visit to the legendary Hansa Studios in Germany, where David Bowie recorded his Berlin Trilogy albums. It’s easy to see that inspiration taking from in “Pharisee”, especially in its slow burning atmosphere of the dance between synths and guitars.
“Pharisee” is the ninth track taken from their upcoming record and continues the tale of a sailor who fell in love with his muse at sea and pushes the narrative forward in a spiritual and intimate direction. The song sounds expansive and immersive, taking on references from 80s synth rock as well as trip-hop dynamics that merge remarkable well with their signature experimental style.

Scarlet Mill perfectly captures the gloomy atmosphere of its inspirations at the same time that they keep their own sound evolving. Their artistic vision feels stronger than ever as they blissfully navigate the yearning and search for freedom that makes perfect sense at this point in the story. It’s a self-reflective and deeply moving affair tied together by a remarkable sense of cohesion with everything they’ve already put out, making their story of uncertainty the centrefold in a magnetic way.
The duo created a song that feels intense but also hopeful at times, touching on loneliness and the search for guidance with elegance and sophistication. Its textures swirl around with impressive precision, giving “Pharisee” the sentiment of being a turning point in the narrative that relies on authenticity and emotions more than anything. It’s a breath-taking track that fully accomplishes what the band set out to do: it’s an evolution of their sound that takes on new and interesting influences, while also being completely on par with what we’ve heard so far. “Pharisee” deepens the sense of danger by adding drama and ambiance, and gives us answers while perfectly setting up more questions.
