Shortly after the stunning work of self-reflection and empathy on “Sophomore Slump“, american artist Ava Valianti returns with “Birthday Cake”. It’s an introspective and honest look at the time passing and what that means for such a young person, written from a perspective very different from her own thoughts.

“I love my birthday. I’m the person who turns it into a whole week. But when I sat down to write this, I thought: what if I hated it? What if it felt like proof that another year went by and nothing turned out the way I thought it would?”, Ava says about where the track came from. “Birthday Cake” sits right in that aftermath, those cold moments of realization that life isn’t doing particularly great and blowing candles simply means that time’s passed, and it’s not worthy of celebration.
It’s a harsh reality and a deeply relatable one, translated beautifully into a folk-inspired alternative rock ballad. She sounds devastated amongst mournful melodies that try their best to remain hopeful, while also fully aware that hope is a thing that of the past. “Birthday Cake” is about when feeling happy starts to feel like pressure, leaving her lingering in the stillness unable to move forward.

“Birthday Cake” approaches the passing of time with dispassionate nihilism, standing as another proof of Ava’s increasing maturity in her writing, capturing snapshots of real life with remarkable clarity. Much like seen on “Sophomore Slump” and “Deep Fuchsia“, Ava is at her most reflective lately while also making the best and most interesting music of her career so far.
She is ready and willing to take her place as indie’s next big thing, honing her songwriting skills more and more with each new track – and I can’t wait to see her blow up!
