After following the success of the Wheels Stop EP with gorgeous single “Get Back My Way” last September, Los Angeles-based indie rocker Eddie Cohn is already back with new music. “Weight of the World” finds the artist leaning forward towards an alternative grunge sound, inspired by both Soundgarden and Tom Petty. The track stands as an interesting juxtaposition of oldschool rock dynamics with modern production, sounding refreshing as it marries strings alongside distorted guitars.

“Weight of the World” is an intimate and poignant reflection on technology’s impact on our daily lives, from the perspective of someone who is a tech supporter but also is concerned about the emotional and mental overstimulation that comes from it. “I wonder if the constant hum of info and news feeds is too much for our brains to handle. Can we go anywhere without being pummeled with a notification or a new threat of information?”, Eddie says just after speaking about how difficult it is lately to just relax and calm down.

It’s an invitation to a deeper reflection surrounding the non-stop avalanche of information that is constantly in our brains, asking us to try to be more mindful about the content we consume. But “Weight of the World”, at the same time, doesn’t judge those moments of doomscrolling or shame people who engage with it.
“I do my best to be intentional about what I allow into my periphery, but sometimes there’s nothing we can do to stay away from the constant noise. The hum is always there”, he concludes. It’s getting harder and harder to filter what is actually needed information and what is simply digital noise in our day and age, and “Weight of the World” offers a kind and supportive place to think about such issues.

The track is accompanied by an intimately-shot music video that features Eddie performing the song alone in big rooms, alternating between the artist himself and snapshots of urban architecture. The direction follows the disorientation of the lyrics quite nicely, capturing the performance through unusual angles and lighting, also making a great use of blur, motion and space.
It perfectly illustrates the sense of comforting confusion that comes from the overflow of digital noise that overflows in our way at any given moment, while still finding moments of authenticity and introspection. It’s a great addition to Eddie’s discography, and an excellent step towards his new era – as he’s promising more music in the near future.
