With over ten years of experience and a multitude of releases since 2019, american psych rock band The Shrubs unveils first new single of the year. “Let Us In” is a spacious track that beautifully follows “Fall Behind“, giving into lush dream pop dynamics and melodic distorted guitars. The song, recorded by the act as a duo consisting of vocalist Sophie and producer Miguel, offers a brand new start of The Shrubs at the same time that highlights what they do at their best.

“Let Us In” is a candid exploration of one of humanity’s greatest vices, and that is the judgement of others. Miguel explains that the track comes from how quickly we seem to label people according to their mental disorders, and that tradition is still a big part of today’s world even if historically we’re the most accepting and understanding of such issues than ever before. It’s an important and pressing matter, laid out bare amonst wall-of-sound guitars and soothing melodies.
The Shrubs have experimented with shoegaze and dream pop before, but never so blatantly as they do on “Let Us In”, opening up marvelous possibilities for their psychedelic-infused sound to bloom. They achieved this sound through the use of analog tape machines and vintage instruments, carefully crafting an atmosphere that feels nostalgic but audacious and refreshing for them. The Houston-based act perfectly balances the old and the new on “Let Us In”, adding remarkable depth to their already-stunning sound.

Their latest single comes from a place of unwavering empathy, as stated by multi-instrumentalist Miguel: “I think the original idea came from seeing how the city Sophie and I live in, Houston, criminalizes or shows complete indifference to the growing homeless population, and I’m sure many other major cities as well”, he comments on the inspirations behind the track. “Let Us In” ends up being a beacon for a more hopeful future, in which acceptance isn’t conditional but the norm. It’s an invitation to reflect on what that could look and feel like, and it sure is a world I would like to live in as well.
