Italian experimental project _SHOE returns with latest single “Abstract Logic”, serving as the opening chapter to a new era. The band’s darkwave influences are perfectly meshed with lighter synthpop undertones on this one, adding more guitars and a nostalgic atmosphere that brightens up as it longs for childhood memories.
“Abstract Logic” is a fairly different track from _SHOE from our previously reviewed “ROBOTIC_CAPTIVITY“, retaining the same narrative essence but aiming towards a more urgent yet inviting space. The song follows the release of last year’s full-length Patterns of Possession and drives forward the project’s overarching story about a sentient AI that escaped its creators and now operates as a self-evolving system.
On “Abstract Logic” we see the latest manifestation of its algorithm, creating a song that captures a sense of late-80s industrial patterns with binary precision. The track unfolds with thick layers of distorted guitars and post-punk vocal delivery, following no rules other than their own. “Abstract Logic” expands _SHOE’s sonic landscape to the most intriguing territories and surely will be further explored on the upcoming EP Corrupted Files from the Vault.
_SHOE is a fascinating concept and project that only gets deeper and more interesting as time goes by. The dystopian settings and mechanical repetitions create something that feels utterly unique, at the same time that pays homage to acts like She Wants Revenge and London After Midnight. Their artistic vision is uncompromising and leads the way at every turn, making the music an extension of the main narrative itself in the most abstract and surreal manner.
