Following great singles “busy. being. Real.” and “Quiet Garden” earlier in the year, Japanese experimental pop project Garbage Garden is already back with “Self-luminescent”. The track is the second installment AND LEAD SINGLE in their DEBUT ALBUM “Still Being…”, and takes a warmer approach to its urgency. A conceptual song about the notions of toxic positivity and the struggles that often happen within oneself because of it, “Self-luminescent”, however, never fully discards it as an inherently negative experience.

It’s a high-energy track built around EDM beats and soft vocals, creating an atmosphere that is optimistic throughout the track. On “Self-luminescent”, Garbage Garden is at their most introspective yet, moving between reality and distortion with relentless determination as it explores deeper meanings of identity and existence itself. “At its core, [the overall project] Still Being is about continuing to exist, even when you don’t align with what’s expected,” the artist says before concluding that “this track is simply one possible state of that condition.”
The release is also their most accessible track to date, dialing down on the hyperpop experimentations in favor of more traditional pop sensibilities. The production is reminiscent of acts like Owl City, upgraded and updated for the modern age. It’s a refreshing song that balances itself on contradictions lyrically as it moves boldly forward on its sound, defying standard conventions of genre in a seamless manner.
A self-reflective track that finds itself right between what society tells you how you should feel and how you actually feel. It’s an exploration of self that deals with feelings of guilt over not being able to love yourself all the time, and the isolation that comes with it. “Self-luminescent” is definitely the deepest and most intriguing track from Garbage Garden until now, proving that the Kobe-based project continues to evolve and re-discover itself with confidence in every new track.
