As a sophomore release that redefines the band’s artistic vision, this upcoming track opens up the doors to the addition of vocals within Radical Man’s compositions. What began as an improvisational jam session in a Portland, Oregon hotel room evolved into a fully-realized original single through the addition of acoustic drums and layered vocals recorded in the studio.
“River” caught me by surprise as I didn’t know what I should expect. I just hit the play button without knowing anything about the band nor the theme. I’m pleased to say that I was immediately drawn towards its dark electronic atmosphere. Its push & pull energy acting like a magnetic force taking me away to a place I couldn’t quite define, but was eager to explore.
And what adds to the intrigue is, thanks to my self-imposed ignorance on the song’s background, that I first thought that I was listening to an instrumental piece. Wonderful were my feelings of surprise as the first vocals emerged from that very deep place, right beneath the music’s mesmerizing flow.
“River” feels organic; it acts as a wonderful passageway into a realm you’ve never quite been before, yet feels somewhat familiar. You don’t feel lost; in fact, you feel as if you’ve been taken back to a place you’ve been far away from for too long, like a buried memory waiting to be unearthed.
Radical Man’s unique take on treating their art as architecture rather than genre blew my mind, as they built a space where time and melody collapse and merge, creating a beautifully soft symphony of musical expression, a safe abyss for the mind to wander about.
