VHS PANTY RIOT is a United Kingdom-based darkwave project that aims to create music that feels like the soundtrack to 80s slasher films that never existed. Their first EP KISS KISS CUT CUT was released recently and it’s made up of five instrumental tracks heavily influenced by synthpop and the darker aspects of late 70s and 80s music, resulting in an immersive experience that is thrilling and occasionally nightmarish.

Amongst the tracks is highlight “Heaven Sent Me a Psycho”, one of the new compositions that wasn’t released as a single before the full EP. The song is built around chilling atmospheres and slow-moving melodies, taking inspiration from the likes of French musicians Carpenter Brut and Perturbator. VHS PANTY RIOT does a remarkable job in blending new wave stylings alongside synthetic strings and urgent drumming, handcrafting an entire world in just under six minutes.
“Heaven Sent Me a Psycho” is an excellent example of VHS PANTY RIOT at their best. The track accumulates tension constantly – even when it releases that tension, the feeling remains. The admiration and understanding of what makes a great slasher soundtrack are truly at the core of the composition; it’s a fast-paced song that somehow still takes its time to construct itself. That dichotomy is perfectly explored by the song’s expansiveness, showing that VHS PANTY RIOT has a very clear artistic vision from the get-go.
KISS KISS CUT CUT is a delightfully interesting EP, brought up by genuine love for the horror genre and a deep comprehension of what it’s telling. It’s a fun, exciting and electrifying ride across a multitude of emotions and musical styles and encompassing elements of nu-metal, goth rock and classical sensibilities as well. VHS PANTY RIOT firmly places themselves as one of the most intriguing producers in the darksynth landscape, offering nuanced compositions that are impressively good at illustrating their own ethos and succeeding with flying colours.
