Yet, Paul Anketell doesn’t just succeed in crafting an exceptional collection of musical pieces; he has conjured an epic sci-fi saga infused with scientific truths and rich elements of horror and fantasy that captivate the imagination.
“Ad Lunam” is a full-length journey comprising 11 tracks, imbued with a rich array of genres that includes Prog-Rock, Thrash, and Psychedelic Metal. What makes it even more remarkable is the astonishing fact that Anketell is an entirely self-taught musician, channeling his passion and creativity to perform and program everything—from the wonderful bass lines to the compelling guitar riffs, melodies, lyrics, and vocals.
Bursting with perilous challenges and awe-inspiring wonders, the album captures the essence of the astronaut’s extraordinary journey, inviting listeners to soar through the cosmos alongside him.
Opening the album is “Second World Problems”. At the onset of a grueling journey, a powerful anthem is essential, and Anketell delivers brilliantly with an explosive blend of frenetic drums and searing guitar riffs that evoke the raw intensity of the Black Metal genre.
“Space Cadet”, and “Blue To Black”, follow along with compositions that pulse with the raw energy of Alt-Rock and Grunge, vividly narrating the terrifying moments as the astronaut propels through the infinite abyss of space, evoking a profound sense of fear and wonder.
“Where Only Machines Have Been” offers some of the most compelling riffs on the album, while “Corridor Of Uncertainty” conjures the hauntingly surreal essence of space-horror, weaving a dark lyricism that would surely evoke pride in the masterful H.P. Lovecraft.
“Taurus Rising” bursts forth as the most aggressive track, roaring to life with a menacing intro and guttural vocals that honestly took me by surprise. Its lyricism, steeped in evocative sci-fi and even religious references, weaves a powerful narrative that explores the awe-inspiring forces that lie beyond our wildest imagination.
“To Dust Returned” is the perfect title for a closing track. This poignant final song casts our young astronaut into the vast, lonely abyss of the universe, stripped of any hope of ever returning home. As the album draws to a breathtaking climax, a profound final message echoes through the silence, leaving an indelible mark as it concludes with an explosive bang.
