Lex Bucha, Dublin-based singer-songwriter, had recently released a song “Paranoid” as part of his EP “Dark Mode”. The dark, highly personal song explored the awful effects betrayal can have on a person. Now, Lex Bucha joined hands with friend, producer and DJ Fionn Elfen, and revealed an explosive and experimental remix of the song. This is “Paranoid (3AM Remix)” featuring Fionn Elfen.
This remix embodies what it’s like to be awake way too late, lying in bed fully under attack by your own mind overthinking every decision and interaction. When the original was a free-fall into the uncomfortable depths of a struggling mind, the remix takes a different approach entirely.
Paranoia, a mental condition of fearful thoughts, causes a heavily disjointed view of people around you and yourself. Deep-rooted anxiety and fear of being harmed can change a person so much he doesn’t recognise himself anymore. This disjointed state of mind can be extreme, and that particular thing is translated really well by the remix, along with feelings of isolation and general doom.
Fast-paces, almost manic sections share their space with momentary floats into snarling sub-bass. The vocals, speaking their mind with crystal clear clarity, are now subject to violent shifts echoing some words and burying others underwater. All the action takes place above an unsettling dark void that wicks away hope and light, making recovery so difficult. What really drives the remix home is the lonely pleading piano chord right at the end asking for help, only to echo into the dark.
Lex Bucha is a storyteller with a hypnotic voice, making indie pop infused with inspirations from artists like Sombr and The Weeknd. The remix, influenced by the likes of Skrillex and Fred Again, is the newest body of work born from collaborating with friend and fellow artist Fionn Elfen, both of whom desired to dive deeper into experimental music to express the deep dark state of paranoia.
