Martin Lloyd Howard, classically trained guitarist from England, is back with another gentle piece of art of his. This one is called “Highland Mist”, an acoustic exploration into the quiet still hills of Scottish Highlands, known for their undisturbed, breathtaking beauty unlike anything you’ve seen before.
For someone, who has only seen imagery of Scottish Highlands on the internet, Martin Lloyd Howard’s new release might as well be a direct portal to the location. His gentle, measured melodies appear effortlessly and as if by magic, and there’s so much embedded in the calmly approaching notes.
There’s a distinct crystalline serenity formed by the melodies slowly building a visual of a chilled vastness veiled by fog. Each passing note gives rise to the feeling of mystery that’s synonymous with these hills, and the utter peace on this rare windless morning. Listening to the piece feels almost as if you’re standing there in the highlands, witnessing the glorious existence of its rugged, mystical landscapes.
“Highland Mist” stands as a distinct piece in Howard’s discography. The artist placed his usual instrument, the 50-year-old handmade classical nylon guitar aside, and picked up a Tanglewood steel string acoustic instrument. On it, he experimented with the DADGAD tuning used in Celtic music, which led to him finding melodic chords that started evoking visuals of the misty Scottish highland terrain. The track was recorded in his home studio with a simple old-school setup of one Rode NT4 microphone positioned at nine inches from the guitar, capturing what has become a magical, beautiful guitar piece.
Martin Lloyd Howard continues to create music that evokes vivid visuals in the listeners’ minds. Originally starting off as a classically trained guitarist, the artist has since expanded his repertoire into blues, folk and rock as well as different tunings like DADGAD. His original solo guitar pieces aren’t just guitar music, but fairly potent gateways to a different place in time with each note telling a thousand words.
