Dedicated to legendary Jamaican reggae guitarist Ernest Ranglin, the United States-based composer and songwriter C’batch just released a brand-new EP. I Guess You Want It This Way is composed of six interpretations of the same title track, offering different production styles and rhythms.
The song dates back to almost 26 years, as the first draft of “I Guess You Want It This Way” came to life around de year 2000 after a trip to Jamaica. Over the years C’batch tried to finish the song with no success, until now. “I Guess You Want It This Way” is a sweet reggae track that keeps its heart across all variations, from the stunning “Cinematic Reggae 1” that opens the EP to the Dub version that closes off the project.
There is an intrinsic tenderness on the track that feels highlighted by the dramatic strings and expansive production in a very organic manner. The artist writes about love and heartbreak with remarkable depth, turning the song into a very intriguing steppingstone between a declaration of love and a breakup track. He merges the reggae influences with R&B and soul dynamics extremely well, pushing his own artistry forward at the same time.
This release was inspired by his Jamaican-born wife’s encouragement for him to write a reggae song, and this felt like the perfect opportunity to revisit that old demo. C’batch is currently going through his own Vault of unreleased songs, making the I Guess You Want It This Way the latest chapter in that endeavour.
This latest work proves that there is a lot of good stuff to still come out of his Vault, and C’batch manages to revive those tracks and turn them into something new and unique for today’s musical landscape – it’s definitely something you won’t want to miss.
