Reetoxa, music project of Australian artist Jason McKee, is bringing forth a fresh single, this time one heavy with meaning and experience. Titled “Timor Leste”, the song looks back to the time McKee was deployed to East Timor with Royal Australian Army to put an end to the terror of local armed rebels. What was a comparatively short mission left everyone involved with lots of baggage to deal with, while peace in the location flourished again.

The story begins with notes of melancholy, a sorrowful undertone caused by what was experienced. McKee’s earnest voice joins the piano ballad turning into a powerful alt rock ballad and recalls what took place. An old ship that took his group to the conflict location. The conflict and immediate gunfire in the location itself. A helicopter with SAS troops that came in and took care of things. And then, no real recognition from the government of the location, or that of Australia on the efforts that were made to bring peace back to East Timor.
Once the rebels were taken care of and all gunfire ceased, birds started singing again. McKee noticed that, and the fact it took the helicopter troops less than an hour to handle the situation. A mission this short generally goes unnoticed by the officials due to various odd reasons, but he and fellow troops were still affected deeply and in a detrimental way. McKee’s voice soars with the heavy melancholy wings as he still remembers clearly the fires that burned down buildings and innocent lives trapped in them.

Jason McKee collaborated with a rather stunning list of acclaimed musicians on the making of this song, as well as the album “Soliloquy”. He was joined by Terry White, a pianist tasked with handling McKee’s sprawling song structure and heavy context. In addition to him, there’s also Kit Riley, bassist of Robbie Williams’ band, drummer Peter Marin from Jet, guitarist James Ryan from Men At Work and producer Simon Moro. Brought together over the common love for music and bonded over tequila and beer, Reetoxa is a powerhouse of a project capable of pretty much anything.
