Rich Anthony imagines all the whimsy and playful things he would do as a ghost, releases “If I Were a Ghost”

What would you do if you were a ghost for a day, say 24 hours? Rich Anthony, a singer-songwriter from Illinois, thought about that question for a while, and turned his answer to a song, aptly titled “If I Were a Ghost”. It turns out, you could do a lot of very fun things as a ghost, and the single provides some of the many options wrapped in a cheerful indie pop sound.

It is the very season for ghosts and other creatures of the dark. With Halloween upcoming, there’s a lot of focus on the bloody and terrifying monsters, but none of these are featured on this song. See, this ghost is one with a light heart and a mind of joy, and he has no interest in being scary and terrifying. Well, maybe just a little spooky, but most of all, this ghost has a long list of desires ranging from whimsical to those shared with possibly many people.

“If I Were a Ghost” by Rich Anthony unravels the list as strummed guitar melodies fill the atmosphere with warmth. The ghost imagines doing everything, from floating through walls and chilling in candy jars and thunderclouds, to the dreamy thoughts of soaring between northern lights and exploring the world without the restriction of passports or planes. And, of course, no chores, no bills, no duties.

“One of my first thoughts was visiting the dog I had when I was a child. The best dog in the world…. But after finishing the song, I thought more on it, and felt a little guilty that I didn’t think about people I could have visited. I taught physics and I could have thought about visiting Einstein ! But the song turned out the way I wanted in the end. A little light-hearted, but also a serious tone at times.” Rich Anthony

Between all those cheerful ideas, a deeper, more melancholic moment comes in. We in the flesh and bones suit carry the ability to remember and to feel things. Do we still get to feel the sunshine and remember what we do now, if we were in the ghost form for 24 hours, or more permanently after death has done us in?

The song comes along with an equally whimsical animated music video featuring the very ghost doing all those things on his list. Like the song, the video has a cheerful foundation with its simple yet effective little cartoon.

Though the song is out in time for Halloween, its lack for scary spooky themes usually present in Halloween music makes the song perfect for all seasons. There’s always something to do for a ghost, even in summertime and Christmas!
