Tillerman strikes back with a humorous take on spreading misinformation on new single “Reputation”

Hailing from Leeds, in the United Kingdom, pop rock trio Tillerman returns with brand new single and video “Reputation”. The track, which is also their first song since last year’s “Summer of ’96“, finds the band at their richest and most melodic yet. “Reputation” thrives on influences from 60s psychedelia that are subtle and incredibly well placed, betting on big choruses and an interesting take on 90s britpop.

The latest single from Tillerman explores how quickly misinformation can spread online at our day and age, standing as a reflective piece that aims to encourage questioning instead of being fed accusations and simply believing it. The now-trio names Stereophonics as the biggest inspiration for this song, especially their 1997 single “A Thousand Trees”, and it’s fairly easy to understand why.

On “Reputation” they build layers upon layers of vocal melodies flawlessly, backed by an easygoing pop production that shines in its own simplicity. That is exactly what the band was going for, as told by the members themselves: “It’s unashameably ‘pop’, we’re not creating avant-garde music for a select niche, it’s an example of the music we love, melodic, great hooks, big choruses and something that’s easy to engage with“. That self-awareness is present all throughout the track and they succeed with flying colours.

Tillerman reflects on social media injustices with the same determination as a scientist would disproof fake news, alas with remarkable sense of humor. This can be felt even more deeply on the track’s beautifully produced music video, led by a punk aesthetic akin to those early Franz Ferdinand visuals. The video follows an investigation on the disappearance of a local postman who’s upset a lot of people, and how quickly the lies about him spread amongst the townsfolk. It perfectly matches the track’s simple but effective ethos, highlighting that Tillerman’s creativity goes well beyond the melodies they string together.

“Reputation” is an excellent comeback for the band, who arrives stronger, lighter, and more intriguing than ever. They manage to bring a new and humorous spin on one of society’s most pressing issues with unwavering determination, fully committed to asking people to not believe in everything the internet says without questioning anything.
