Hard, huge, progressive. Today, Australian up-and-coming prog-rock band, Patient Lounge, delivered their hardest hitting track yet. “Useless” is a prog-rock conveyance of a dysfunctional relationship surrounded by a toxic environment. Sick fast riffs, fat drums, epicness all around.
In case you missed Patient Lounge’s previous article you can find it here: “BEGDA”
Patient Lounge are Australia’s own heavy hitting prog-rock heads from Brisbane. They are amongst great musical promises from their homeland like Karnivool and Voyager and are determined to give their fans great music and very special interaction.

Following up their prog-rock epic “BEGDA”, their new single, Useless, was partially made on a single drive to the studio. “We re-wrote a heap of the lyrics (including adding the bridge melody) on the drive in to the studio“. A song about a broken relationship where one part has lost trust in the other whenever he/she goes out, and the other part seems to relish in torturing their partner.
The suffering character is filled of anxiety and totally obsessed with the relationship. Both feelings seem to grow throughout the tune until the realization of the toxicity of it all, and that it needs to be ended. Whoever, Patient Lounge says that’s just one way to view it, as they like to keep their lyrics a bit open for the listeners to make up whatever they feel right.
With a swaying groove, melodic vocals and odd time signatures, Useless seems to shift from one side to the other keeping its energy fresh and their composition interesting. The melodic bridge sets an emotional vibe right before it explodes into a massive tide of fat riffs and one epic solo.
“Useless was one of the hardest songs to nail lyrically. I knew what I wanted to say, and getting
over the weird 7/8 grooves in the verse with words that didn’t just tell the story in an interesting way, but kept the listeners attention while everything else was going on, was a really fun challenge,” – Patient Lounge
Patient Lounge have collected a variety of accomplishments, from opening for Wolfmother, Haken (UK), and Pop Evil (US), to having played in numerous festivals like Dead of Winter, BIGSOUND 2020, Valley Fiesta and The Other Festival.
The single was engineered by Bernie Wedrat (Chris Lord-Alge, Tom Lord-Alge, Michael Brauer) at Lush Recording Studios (The 1975, The Butterfly Effect, Katy Perry) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Billy Joel, Green Day, Mastodon).
