La Sante “Something Is Happening”

We’re glad to announce that Stockholm, Sweden-based dream pop artist La Sante has released a new single, entitled “Something Is Happening.”

La Sante is the solo music project of Nikki Nyberg (Honeymilk). His previous two singles from 2020 (“We Belong Here” and “Stick Around”) have been hyped on blogs and digital spaces, not only in Nordic countries but also around the world. Now La Sante has returned with a third single, “Something Is Happening”—marking the culmination of a beautifully coherent, nostalgic trilogy that will be included in his upcoming debut album, which is anticipated to generate a lot of buzz.

“Something Is Happening” takes an introspective perspective to life’s moments of sudden change. Rolling in with a thumping bass and drum section, the jazz chord driven psychedelic guitar sprinkled cocktail only seems to come to a sobering halt with the chorus—just like those moments in life when you realize the gravity of every moment, consequence, and the lingering sense of “now what”; when suddenly life itself, like a nineties screensaver, colors in the many nuances that make it a life truly lived.

Nikki Nyberg elaborates on the meaning behind La Sante’s latest single, “So, the backstory of this track is that I wanted to capture the vibe of those sudden motions when something suddenly breaks the silence. When something really stirs the pot in life, life that sometimes feel like its going on autopilot. The sudden shift of tempo in the refrain is supposed to convey that feeling. But it’s also kind of a nod towards being out of focus, whether by substances or by simply feeling jaded. Sometimes, things HAVE to happen, in order to turn things around for the better.

“Something Is Happening” opens with resonant bass notes and powerful drumming, creating a rhythmically compelling backdrop for the clean-toned lead guitar melody to soar over, while airy synths add subtly to the track’s dreamlike atmosphere. During the first verse, ethereal vocal melodies are nicely underscored by palm-muted rhythm guitar; while the following chorus sees the perpetual motion set by the rhythm guitar superseded by calm and dreamy jazz guitar chords, creating a sudden feeling of reflection or awakening.

The initial lead guitar melody then returns, bridging perfectly into the track’s next verse and chorus; and as the chorus repeats, the lead guitar takes on a slightly different tune than before, signaling the beginning of a brief instrumental section with layers of gritty distorted guitars momentarily breaking up the song’s trance-like effect. A final chorus then brings back the hypnotic rhythms and initial lead guitar melody, which intertwines with the shimmering textures of a second clean-toned electric guitar to nicely conclude the track.

“Something Is Happening” is quite an enjoyable listen, showcasing La Sante’s brilliant songwriting and superb musicianship; I would highly recommend this track to fans of dream pop and indie music alike.
