Avaraj started December off with the release of her latest release, an EP called “Precious Memories”. Dedicated to her beloved late grandmother, the heartfelt record takes a journey through the final years spent with the person slipping into the void of Alzheimer’s. It’s a bittersweet introspection witnessing the inevitable, and a comforting EP for anyone whose loved one is fading away from dementia.

As terminal illnesses with no way out, dementia and Alzheimer’s are unfortunately a common way to go for old people. What makes these particular neurological illnesses so much worse is how the affected person gradually loses their former self, starts to forget and becomes dependent much against their will, and it’s an unstoppable path down a one way street. There’s nothing else to do than just witness the demise and be there for the beloved person while battling the terror inside.

Those dreadful feelings of grief and helplessness are very familiar to Avaraj and her family. Feeling angry and full of sadness, and not wanting to feel that way, the young artist turned to the healing power of music and took a deep look into the things she missed. Out came 5 songs with delicate lyricism of bleeding emotions and heartfelt promises, written to comfort both herself and those around her.

Avaraj, while battling with the heavy events, didn’t want the negative feelings to take over. Instead, the songs concentrate on the beautiful moments and the promise of being there and not letting the illness change how she feels about her granny. For every fearful though, there’s a soft and loving reflection headstrong on finding solace in the most hopeless situation. So while the beloved person is fading away and no longer recognises you, but you will always remember who they really are.
That’s a Precious Memory.

The 5 songs turned into the “Precious Memories” EP and feature Avaraj’s emotional and moving vocals. The songs join to form a longer tale that speaks of Avaraj’s and her family’s journey to acceptance while following her granny’s journey with Alzheimer’s. A combination of genres joins hands here, starting with the spoken word intro and continuing with ethereal indie pop ballads infused with elements of rnb and trap. Avaraj’s production and songwriting skills shine bright here and give the heavy themes of this EP a captivating soothing sound, something that is highly appreciated when you are in the middle of darkness, in need of hope and comfort.

Thoughts about what could be different if grandpa was still alive, the terrifying fear of being forgotten by your own mother, and the relentless progression of dementia have a place in the delicately formed EP. It’s so intensely relatable and the way Avaraj sings about these thoughts hits very close in the soul. The intro, which the EP starts off with, is one of the most heartbreaking yet loveful spoken word clip I’ve heard so far. The concentrated poem-shaped promise to be there for her granny no matter what, also serves as a beautiful prologue to the rest of the EP. It’s just beautiful.

The last song of the EP, “Won’t Forget Her” has an equally touching music video, which you can see here:
