Serbian indie act Bones in Butter releases their first full length album, that serves as a compilation as well as a perfect introduction to the band’s sound. Songs for a Sane Society arrives fully formed, giving the songs a newfound life in the most stellar of ways. The album comes with fifteen tracks, and we’ve covered more than half of it as singles since 2021’s “So Alone”, and it’s been wonderful to listen carefully as they evolve into greatness.

And Songs for a Sane Society is the moment in which said greatness appears: it’s one of the best debut albums of the year, even though all of its songs were previously released over the past two years. Songs for a Sane Society crafts an intricate atmosphere full of richness and nuance in the production, elevating their songwriting to the highest of heights and painting a soundscape that is both delightful as it’s dark and interesting.
Making the best use of their post-punk influences, Bones in Butter adds sensational detail and depth to their songs and blend them perfectly with indie sensibility and a pop vein. The experience of having the album recorded and released homeopathically over the years creates a fairly unique listening experience – you can finally see the band’s atmospherics and influences taking shape all at once.
The songs find themselves as a part of a brand-new context this time around, and it sounds so thoughtful from start to finish. Dealing with disparate thematic such as alienation, virtual realities, oppression and survival while still remaining deep down an album about love and hope threaded with irony and humor, Songs for a Sane Society works every step of the way.
“Her Cave”, one of the earliest songs from 2021, lands on a spot in between the new singles “Another Cloud” and “Down but Not Out” and it gives the track a completely new meaning. “Her Cave” feels like a Nick Cave/The Birthday Party inspired song with low vocals and menacing sounds that are both eerie and somewhat comforting, serving as a break from the britpop of “Another Cloud” beautifully and reminding the listener that Bones in Butter can get very dark at times.
Songs for a Sane Society is a deep dive into the most diverse genres, exploring elements from jazz to pop in a way that feels decadent and tasteful, going in different directions and still finding itself as a cohesive piece of work.
The album closes with a sequence of covers, “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?”, originally written by american folk poet Pete Seeger, and “Beyond the Sea” – the English-language version of the french song “La Mer” by Charles Trenet and translated by Jack Lawrence. Both of the track fit the album perfectly both in lyrical themes as well as the oldschool production, that features an amazing array of strings and pianos to enrich the album and becoming an absolute stunning send off.
Songs for a Sane Society stands tall as one hell of a debut album, filled with impeccable production and a very interesting storytelling that’s being weaved for years before finally taking this ultimate form. Bones in Butter does a wonderful and remarkable job in tying almost everything they’ve done this far into an album that feels tasteful and elegant like few others – and by choosing to rearrange the previously known tracks like this, Songs for a Sane Society earns its place as both a proper debut album for the band as well as their first ‘Best Of’ compilation.
