It wasn’t long ago that the boys from Leicester (UK) a.k.a. 9 o’Clock Nasty, were fully engaged in “Culture War,” a full-length, smash-mouth album that challenged just about every social norm imaginable in both audible and visual form. No doubt one of my favorite records of last year. The vinyl, the merch, the coffee table book, I was (am) all about it! (Check out my swag HERE).

I was even more thrilled to learn shortly thereafter that they just-so-happened to also have an Alternative Christmas song at the ready, and that they were down to contribute it for the Indie Dog Days of Xmas compilation last December. And of course… naturally…the song 9 O’Clock Nasty contributed, titled “Santa Claus is Broke,” was one of the stand-out, favorite tracks for many listeners of the CD.
Well, here we are in February of the new year, and the guys are back at it again. Not only smashing, as in descriptively on wax, but in title as well with “SMASH, GRAB, & GO,” streaming everywhere this Saturday, February 17th.
Before even hearing a note, the title itself and the way the band had previously described the track did not lead astray. It is as advertised. It has me imagining a multiverse where the Beastie Boys stuck more with the hardcore punk sound they started with (totally a thing, if you happen to not know) and integrated with the Seattle grunge scene as opposed to emerging through New York Hip Hop. It’s a cool sound. One of my favorite tag lines from the press release describing the ethos of the track was:
Everything is complicated except for the beating heart of violence. SMASH, GRAB, & GO.
What I like best about the vibe of the track is that it’s noisy and menacing like you’d hear on a grunge record a kin to “In Utero” yet it is steadily energetic and hyped up like a Public Enemy, or even more so, Beastie Boys track from the late 80s.
Want to hear it?!! I invite you to tune-in to AMS Radio this Thursday at 6pm Pacific for the LT1KF Indie Hour and listen to it with me before it comes out this Saturday! We’ll be debuting the band’s new single and kicking off an hour of independent music that you read about here on Less Than 1000 Followers.
Lastly, I’ll leave you with some thoughts from the artists about the track. See you Thursday!
“I wanted to write a song that captures the moment it finally hits. When that wall of noise drops and the beat kicks in”
Ted Pepper, 9 o’clock Nasty
“Some songs take time to flourish and grow. This one hits you on the back of the head and drinks all your coffee”
Pete Brock, 9 o’clock Nasty
