Michael Donoghue is back on the blog with his new body of work, this time an EP titled “Mantes”. The release sees the artist depart from the usual rhythm-directed music and going straight into the beatless domain – an astral version of deep-sea realms. “Mantes” is a calm yet highly visceral little album where the absence of clear rhythm is replaced by ethereal sound driven by its own pulse.

This ethereal pulsating sound runs through 4 different realms for the total runtime of 15 minutes. Deep blue is possibly the most fitting color for this journey down to the unknown so far away that the surrounding realms turn alien. One could hear critters running past in “Thespidae” and the humbling vastness of this plane seen in “Tenodera”. Whether this release takes place in deep sea or somewhere in the unexplored areas hidden within the dormant parts of our minds, is up for the listeners to interpret.

The title of the EP reads a whole lot like “Mantis”, the album’s first track. It’s not just a similarity – the other three songs are named after genuses of mantis. For the overall sound, the naming scheme is another hint to look into the overlooked and the hidden, not just the obvious and big, and the EP’s ambience proves to be an excellent guide in navigating those realms of small, but yet so diverse places.
Originally, the four tracks have already been out in the open for some time as part of Michael Donoghue’s previous albums, but in a different shape. For “Mantes”, these four put away the percussion and went through some more transformation to ultimately become this journey into ambience. Inspiration for creating “Mantes” came to Donoghue, when he prepared the setlist for his first ever live show back in December and started reworking the tracks for live setting. It was a wholly enjoyable process, and that delight is clearly detectable in every part of the record.
