Porter Introduces “Sally”

The saga in the ficticious universe of “Genosha” continues as Porter returns with a new single from the upcoming album by the same name. “Sally,” the third single released to date, dropped on February 16th. And just as with the previously released singles “Tax Free Hollows” and “Behind the Banlieue,” Porter does a stand-up job of blending an emotional and dark verbal messaging with the push and pull of a balanced melancholy and wrath.

What we’ve learned throughout our conceptual tour of universe “Genosha” thus far, is that the band leans heavily into questioning what kind of society we wish to live in. Although quite expressionist lyrically, the band states quite clearly in their press release what the meaning of the song is:

“”Sally” is the third single from our album “Genosha”, which will be released in 2024, and is particularly close to our hearts. Integrated into the overall context of the album of a world that exists parallel to ours, “Genosha”, the song addresses the violence against women and girls that occurs in so many different forms. It doesn’t even have to be physical violence. Violence has many faces. Be it psychological or social in nature. The mere fact that women do not have the same opportunities as men causes incredible suffering and creates inequalities that damage the individual, but ultimately also society. “Sally” is a beacon against all forms of violence against women.”

Musically I love the drum sound they achieved on this track. The snare is punchy, and you don’t lose the kick drum at any point in the mix. The guitar tone is slick with soaring guitar leads over crunchy rhythms allowing dissonance to ring out over a steady driving bass. Their apporach genre-wise, is an interesting mix that can veer into a sinister Grunge vibe, but sounds very Prog throughout. Throw in a dash of Power Metal into the mix, and that’s a bit of what I hear in the band’s overall sound. Raimund, the lead singer, performs great vocals that resemble something by my ear like Ozzy but with a Maynard touch stylistically.

Really looking forward to the band dropping the album at some point this year. If you’re a vinyl junkie like I am, you’ll be happy to know that the band is also putting this album out on 12-inch vinyl as well! Keep up with them on their official website and Bandcamp for more updates on that.
