It’s true, you can only be as healthy as your environment allows you to be. That’s however just one line of what Gary Dranow has to say in his new release “Black Coal Lung”, which already has a title that hints on serious topics. And it is – the song takes place in a small community near Ohio, where the lives of its residents are overshadowed by a nearby coal power plant. Gary Dranow gives this community of people missing their health a voice to be heard.

As one could imagine, the ashes and smoke cast to its surroundings by the coil power plant give way to what could only be eternally dimmed moods of those who have long forgotten what a breath of fresh air is like. This is portrayed by Gary with melancholy melodies sung by the harmonica, the heavy progression and Gary’s own vocals expressing pain and despair in its countless layers. Add to it a moody solo of an electric guitar combining pure melody with ragged distortion, and the atmosphere is complete. A home of unlivable conditions to people stuck to their place and struggling with their health issues in silence.

In a permanently greyed town where pretty much everyone is struggling to breathe with their ash-blackened lungs, a dream for bright blue skies and clean air remains but a distant thought behind the coal smoke. The reality is harsh with early death hanging above every living creature in the area, and the coal plant keeps smoking without any care to what it’s doing to the surrounding areas. A grim and sobering song to remind that the greatest pollutants still do their thing freely while individuals suffer.

The single will be part of Gary Dranow’s upcoming full-length, where it joins a slew of previously released singles such as “Bodywise” and “Hadrian’s Wall”. All of the releases have shown Gary’s skill in songwriting and storytelling in its best light, and it just keeps getting better. Gary Dranow and the Manic Emotions do not shy away from shining light on hard topics and it’s excellent – being silent will not get us anywhere and Gary takes the form of a helpful guiding light towards the better world.

“Black Coal Lung” is out now on all platforms.
