Quite a title! But then again, “Presents: A Simple Solution to Toxic Masculinity” is not intending to be a simple harmless record, in fact it’s quite the opposite. Your Best Nightmare, a potent singer-songwriter and producer has been exploring the theme of having a vampire lover, who eats toxic masculine people for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the LP is a long-form tale of this blood-soaked dark love story seeking to crack the male-dominant world and to recognise the power women have within. All without the typical “We are powerful” cliches – this is a visceral punk record with blood on the tooth.

The simple solution to the problem of toxic masculinity by Your Best Nightmare gradually shows itself through the album’s 11 songs, each adding their own piece to complete the picture. It’s a fierce, flaming story of dysfunctional relationships with men that look down on women and see them as ‘assets’ rather than equals, and along those events runs an intoxicating and passionate lover vampire theme. Genre-wise it’s a punk record with a taste of art rock, pop, folk, resulting in a dense blend of musical styles weaved together with some suitably dark magic.
Armed with a sharp tongue and gasoline with the intention of setting societal norms on fire, Your Best Nightmare invites the listeners to the multi-chapter horror love story, which starts off with “Promising Young Woman”, an introduction of the story’s self-titled nightmare. She is set to reject rules put in place by patriarchy and work on her own dreams free of coercion by the toxic men. “Don’t Mess With Me” is a demonic anthem of warning to stand back and let her do her thing… Otherwise the twirling red love dance of “Vampire Lover” is quick to follow.
From this point LP takes a turn towards a murderous spree with red lipstick and a defeating smile. “Target Acquired” aims a gun at the toxic boyfriend messing with the wrong girl, whereas “Very Cute” is a flashback of visiting a restaurant with said boyfriend and watching him argue with every employee on sight. And then, the boyfriend dies. The album, now driven by the taste of blood, continues with songs like “Body Count” and “Paint The Town Red”, which both are dead-set to put an end to toxic masculinity for good.
The album finishes off in a a hauntingly empty town, and the final dance of victory and love takes place in “Ghost Town Love”, possibly the softest and most intimate song on the entire album.
Your Best Nightmare’s debut LP is definitely not for the faint of heart. But those who love skillful genre-blends or are suckers for horror and romance will find this release to be a thrilling adventure!
