Dr Dawsound is a French electronic music producer, composer and lyricist who’s found success with the singles “Stellar Pulse” and “Electric Heartbeat” before finally releasing Universal Love, his FULL-LENGTH debut album. On his first singles, we got a taste of his organic synthpop with solid dance-oriented beats and melodies. Those were great singles, so naturally the very idea of getting more from him was exciting.

Universal Love expands his sonic vocabullary all at once and it’s great. By giving us ten new tracks alongside those singles, Dr Dawsound shows us he’s not afraid of experimenting, toying around with pre-conceived notions of genre and tempo and creating danceable synthpop that prioritises having fun. Right on the first new track, also released as a single on the same day the album dropped, “Amor de Verano”, we see Dr Dawsound playing with latin-inspired rhythms in his production. It sounds captivating like a Camilla Cabello song, with gorgeous female vocals. “Amor de Verano” brings a whole new side to Dr Dawsound, and feels warm like a summer breeze while doing it.
From then on in, the sky is the limit – and he sometimes even surpasses that. Over the course of the album, we get to see Dr Dawsound exploring all different varieties of synthpop, adding everything from house music influences to indie rock guitars. Somehow, the Marseille-based musician makes it all work effortlessly like a tightly knit patchwork quilt.

“Girl in a Hurry” features excellent indie pop sounds that come straight from the 2000s, while the banger “Blue” that quickly follows it immerses itself on waves of 80s synths and crystal clear vocals. Dr Dawsound describes himself as “not a singer nor a live performer”, so he works with different vocalists from all around the world to bring his visions to life. That variety of voices matches the different sounds explored by him perfectly as he moves on from style to style. He even closes the album with an incredibly heartfelt piano ballad “Perfect Time”, proving that this man can do everything.
Universal Love sounds like a timeless record, with a very clear line of dance music threading itself throughout the tracks. The goal is to move around, get the people feeling good and dancing to the beat – and he most definitely succeeds on that front. The strings added as the intro and background for “Music” sound hauntingly beautiful and mash with the electronic drums seamlessly, as does the acoustic guitars on “U (Universal Love)”.
The tapestry weaved by Dr Dawsound feel electrifying on its twists and turns. There is so much going on at all times, and yet somehow everything falls exactly into place and creates a bigger picture that just makes you feel good. One day after the album was released, Dr Dawsound also made available the entire record on its instrumental form – and it’s well worthwhile having a listen, on that version we can sense how interwoven the production is even more.

Universal Love is what modern dance music should sound like: it’s fun, interesting and unafraid to try new things along the way while still being easily recognizable as a dance record. Taking inspiration from everything and everyone from Dua Lipa to Björk but also Chvrches and Ladytron, Dr Dawsound made an album that sounds all over the place and shoots into several different directions – and never misses once.
