German electronic music producer Luke Tangerine strikes back with a BRAND-NEW collaboration, this time he teamed up with Austrian singer Robson Darker and the two came up with “In den Tiefen der Nacht”, which can be roughly translated to “In the Depths of the Night”. It features a post-punk undertone that we haven’t heard yet from Luke, and it sounds very, very good from start to finish.

Sung by Robson Darker entirely in German, the song relies heavily on the atmosphere that is commonplace for post-punk and new wave, with hints of darkness and a very interesting use of space. Alongside the traditional layers of synths and percussion, we get guitar riffs and a darkwave approach to songwriting and production that feels incredibly fresh and unique.

Even though there is an intrinsic darkness that surrounds the track, the synths seem to shine bright against the post-punk backdrop and the result is something that tricks your brain in the best possible way. Robson’s vocals sound remarkably dynamic and cinematic, bringing something truly special to this collaboration with Luke Tangerine that feels like the beginning of a new era for both musicians.
On true post-punk fashion, the lyrics of “In den Tiefen der Nacht” speak about human longing and existential despair, blurring the lines between reality and a dream-like state. There are references of escaping the monotony of everyday life and surrendering into the cosmos, exploring “the dichotomy between the mundane and the infinite”. It is definitely a very complex song, and one that gets its point across even if you don’t speak German – you can still tell exactly what is going on from the production and atmospheres crafted by these two.
“In den Tiefen der Nacht” is truly a remarkable collaboration, one that brings a freshness to this song that makes it sound like nothing else, it’s a great listening experience and get your head around it. You can definitely tell how inspired both artists were to work together, and that is what makes a collaboration like this work so well. Thankfully, both artists have expressed how pleased they were with this collaboration and stated that this is only the first step of their musical journey together, and I cannot wait for more.
