On April 12th, Supercaan is set to release their new LP carrying the title “A Tiger Walks the Streets”. Here the creeping tiger symbolizes the equally sneaky aftermath of modernization, and the album itself sees Supercaan facing their biggest anxieties and fears. FROM RIGID SOCIETY AND PUPPETS-ON-STRINGS to the passing of a very close friend, the LP contains everything that hurts, and forms them into a beautiful shoegaze storyteller journey.

Supercaan, named after a a dark thriller by British author J.G. Ballard, “Super-Cannes”, move into the chilling and dread-sprinkled inner realms in their second full-length album. The band, now older and having their own families, wanted to create an album not just for the sake of making another album, but to channel what they call “slightly naive wisdom” together with introspective thoughts into fables. “A Tiger Walks The Streets” is a collection of such fables, and the album contrasts innocence of childhood with rigid society.
And thus, the 10-track release comes with heavy themes, as possibly expected, packaged into what could be best described as aching soul poetry inside psychedelic indie rock atmosphere with electronic structures. It hits surprisingly hard, so be warned to take your time to reflect along with the emotional vocals.
The album starts off with a short intro, the creeping tiger of modernization that reminds that our place in the world in is as fragile as we are ourselves. That existential dread inducing line echoes through droning echoing soundscapes full of fleeting memories and moments of all kinds of emotions, as the opening track builds the stage for what’s to come. And there’s plenty to come.
Where that line originates from, is “Nagaro”, an echoing speedy track based on the eponymous Japanese ghost town inhabited by dolls. The once bustling vibrant life of a village has vanished, as if it was never there in the first place. The song, however, runs on that feeling of absent life as it looks for solutions in the inner stillness.
Even more stillness is present in the beginning of “Everything Collapses”, the song reflecting on the passing of a former drummer bandmate. Heavy with grief, the song crawls its way through shadowy dread and hopelessness, until it finds a seed of hope sprouting in the bandmate’s son growing up and playing drums like his dad.
Where the happenings thrown into your life start taking you over, the album’s final song comes in to caress with ethereal sounds. “Panic Carefully With Me” offers a solemn presence in the cloud of unknowing, while somehow making the troubles feel lighter on your shoulders.

“We wanted this album to sound like it must have bankrupt some small indie label to make (a la my bloody valentine) but we had to make it on a shoestring. Massive props to producer Simon Weaver (matters and Katherine Priddy) for helping us pull it off. We sweated over every detail and made sure each track had at least one surprise (the deep bass breakdown of Storms or the samba outro or Ricochet). We might be told old and have too many responsibilities to make another album, but we’re proud we’ve managed this one.”

This album is also available on vinyl, which you can get your hot hands on via Bandcamp. An obligatory “must have”, but with the foundation of utter, honest truth – during the course of writing this piece of article, the band went from unknown to possibly one of the best indie rock albums I’ve heard so far. All because of the audibly huge amount of soul and dedication present in every track, as well as the splendid production.
Feed the battered and starved inner child with the soothing sound of “I know how you feel” and check the album on April 12… “And let the music heal your soul”!
