Porter Condemns Brutality with “Tout est pardonné”

Porter of Germany has been releasing string of singles since November of last year lyrically introducing us to a fictional universe referred to as “GENOSHA,” but at the same time providing a non-fictional critique of society at large. “Tout est pardonné” is the latest addition to the mix, one that you could say the band intended to be a bit of a misdirection for the listener.

Shimmering guitars introduce the song in a key and vibe reminiscent of Foo Fighter’s “Everlong.” The distortion drops off as the drums and rhythm section lock in at the verses in a very classic 90’s alternative rock dynamic. You feel as though you’re about to be charmed into a ballad. Amidst the bass grooving, head bobbing verses however, are some of the darkest lyrics in Porter’s repertoire. It’s been confirmed by the band as being about Sophie Scholl, a resistance fighter that was eventually arrested and executed by Nazis.

Many historians’ buffs dispute about Scholl’s last known words, but in the conversation are ones that Porter uses to begin the verses with. Meant to provoke thought, and challenge silence at the hands of fascism. The song is indeed an interesting one to process given the context of the underlying subject matter. Musically the song is steadily upbeat and “dreamy,” if you will. Here’s what the band has to say about the opening lyrics:

Powerful words that still make you shudder today, because of her courage, her clear attitude towards an enemy as inhuman as it is overpowering, even in the face of her imminent and certain death.

Self-described as a “Progressive Alternative Rock” band, Porter has a history of genre-bending with their music. Members of the band have vast arrays of stylistic influences and much of it tends to show up in their overall sound. What could start out sounding one way in a song, can at some point ping pong between melancholy and anger, or energetic and dissonant.

In line with the premise of being about a historical figure, the over-arching message the band wants to convey is to remain courageous, even when it might seem futile. The band takes a hard stance on that ethos, and I totally respect that. Check out the lyrics:

Mob rules is a state of mind
One condition to decline
Never let the hatred rise
In your heart and in their eyes

Laws are changing
My spirit won’t hearts are free
You are not free
How could all the cowards be
In their shameful misery

Such a lovely day
I’m forced to go
But what’s life worth
If we can’t wake up a thousand

Today you’re killing us
Tomorrow it’s your turn
My last goodbye
May they continue
What we have started

Soon you’ll stand in my place
A pure heart’s life in a murder’s land
Spread the word to all the other friends
The sun still shines
Until the end
