DCxPC Live is an incredibly interesting project covered here many times already; they’re a record label responsible for releasing mainly live music vinyls from many artists across the rock, metal and punk genres mostly. On their latest installment, we got a killer performance from american ska band The Phensic, in which they play mostly songs from their debut album Don’t Test Me.

Taking their name from a Jamaican slang for aspirin, The Phensic are a ska band with a very unique and soulful sound that hits even harder live – and that is exactly the point behind this release. On the studio version of Don’t Test Me, released in September 2023, we got the sense of creativity and newness that can only come from a fresh mindset. Featuring great songs that drank from the 60s and 70s reggae, punk and two-tone movements, The Phensic proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

On this stunning live performance, freshly released by the DCxPC Live label, we get to experience their songs in full power. It’s a somewhat short album, composed of seven tracks recorded live in late December at the Orange West Studio in New Jersey, and featuring full band performances with guest musicians in an absolutely thrilling ride.

The main quartet behind The Phensic are all experienced musicians on their own, having worked with iconic bands such as Rude Boy George, Bigger Thomas and Hub City Stompers. They are greatly backed by guest vocalists Megg Howe, Pamela Anderson and Honeychild Coleman in renditions that feel fun, light and prove that there’s nothing quite live music.

As the band rails through an excellent selection of songs from their debut album, including “Don’t Test Me”, “War Inside”, “Number One (Again)” and “Is It True?”, the feeling that we get is one of pure and unadulterated joy. The live renditions on this pressing capture perfectly the wild happiness of live music in a way that very few live recordings actually manage to. They bring the songs to life and make you feel like you’re in the room with them and that is a truly remarkable feat for an album like this.

The sounds explored by The Phensic on Don’t Test Me are rooted in DIY ska punk but incorporate elements from a myriad of influences and they all shine even brighter in this live setting. Curated with alchemic perfection, DCxPC Live released an album that definitely is a must listen for fans of ska, by a trailblazing band that actually feels fresh and make the scene interesting. In the face of No Doubt reuniting again after almost ten years, it feels like definitely a fitting time to immerse yourself in the wildness that is ska if you never did it before – and this album is a perfect place to start.
