Attic Theory is a Liverpool-based alternative rock band whose HIGHLY ANTICIPATED debut album, What We Fear the Most, never lets down. Ever since the band’s first singles and EPs around 2018 and 2020, the sextet has been perfecting their craft and coming up with a unique and distinctive sound amongst the british indie rock scene. Produced by Loïc Gaillard, What We Fear the Most shines with fierce urgency, blending together elements that come from all different sides: grungy and explosive guitars, strong vocals backed by britpop influences and a stunning sense of groove and melody.

The first singles released from the album, “Narrow Lines” and “Papier-Mâché“, were already hinting at this sonic palette, carefully explored by the band to its fullest potential spread across eleven tracks. This is an absolute rollercoaster of an album, one that takes you by the hand and guides you through its own little universe of sound. On their finest work to date, Attic Theory expertly creates tracks that revel in nostalgia but still come across as modern and contemporary, always looking for the future and rushing forward instead of going back.

From the very first few notes in opener “Violent Delight” you can already tell how wild and unpredictable this is going to be. Exploring both strength and vulnerability, What We Fear the Most stands on its own as a truly remarkable piece of work and by the time you get to the classic rock inspired guitar solo on “Tapestry”, there is no turning back – and it’s only track four.

This collection of raw and honest songs delves into the depths of human emotions, touching upon themes of loss, heartbreak, and the struggles we all face in life“, frontman Lewis Wright explains about the album and its title. Lewis has a very personal relationship with this album, that goes beyond fronting the band.

As the band were recording What We Fear the Most, Lewis had to undergo throat surgery and at first didn’t know if he’d ever be able to sing again. Thankfully, everything worked out for the best: “This album represents not only my love for music but also the resilience and determination that allowed me to rise above adversity“, he concludes. That overall uncertainty of the future bleeds through the poignant lyrics and melodies, adding an extra layer of depth to this already rich and nuanced work.

Sounding more lush and mature than their excellent first EP The Sign of an Active Mind, the proper debut album from Attic Theory soars high above the hardship and tough times. On “Dare to Dream”, perhaps the most direct example of this overcoming of hurdles, Lewis sings about fighting for air and continuing to dream in spite of the mishaps that surrounded this period of his life. It also stands out as one of the most interesting tracks on the album, going from a somewhat acoustic ballad to a full on stoner rock chorus in the blink of an eye.

Constantly playing with textures, sounds and filled with interesting production choices, What We Fear the Most is never what you expect that it’ll be. Attic Theory really pushed themselves on this album and turned all the sadness, angst and hope into beautifully crafted songs that mesmerize with creativity. An expression of catharsis and healing, What We Fear the Most sounds like an optimistic message of confidence and aspire to inspire the listeners to push through the pain: the other side of the path is definitely worth it.
