Talia Grace reveals “From Under You”, her most personal EP yet

On April 26th, Talia Grace releases her new EP “From Under You”. The Austin-based singer-songwriter has compiled a short yet immensely deep and emotional little record on the terrifying, dark shadowy realms beneath the surface of love. “From Under You” is an EP of honesty on some very hard topics and brings a feeling of being heard for anyone that can identify with the stories.

Smoke is my most personal song and, honestly, it’s my proudest accomplishment. It was written directly to address the man who assaulted me many years ago, and I was hesitant to ever publish it.

Said stories are coming from the artist’s personal experiences as a woman in the world of dating, and the EP sees Talia turning the hurt, sadness and despair into tales of resilience, a triumph of coming out the other end with more clarity. Talia Grace is a lyricist valuing honesty and vulnerability above all and finds inspiration from artists like Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver. She spends plenty of time recording music in the apartment of her producer friend, Taylor Webb, whose skills are also present on this record.

This particular EP is a very cathartic and rather painful listen. It’s supposed to make you feel uncomfortable as you hear her thoughts on being “the Girl Before the Girl”, being seen as a milestone rather than a destination.

Remembering things from your past that you’d rather forget as outlined in “Greedy Reminders”, or realizing the painful truth that your love for a person remains unanswered in “Lavender Latte”.

And the most terrifying experience of them all recounted in an open letter titled “Smoke”, addressed to the assaulter. That particular song was also the hardest one to record for Talia Grace, to the point her producer asked why she even wanted to record it. Talia’s reply was that of speaking out truth:

“I don’t want to. I have to. It’s crucial to the narrative of the record, and I think it talks about things that are too important to ignore.”

“One really cool detail that I love is at the end of Smoke. The same note on the piano is played four times, and it’s sort of the last thing you hear in the song. That is a musical interpretation of the fact that I have the last word on my own life. It was really important to me, in some small way, to honor myself and all other survivors at the end.”

“From Under You” is weaved together with vocals that depict the feelings present in lyrics with unwavering clarity, and instrumentation that creates an atmosphere of pain and heartbreak, tinted with a quiet hope for better times ahead. That notion in particular is present in the ending track of the EP, “Greedy Reminders”, as she walks through a string of memories about people in her life, and things she did in the past.

“I want people to take a lot away from this EP. I want people to feel a little hopeful by the end of it. More than anything, I hope anyone who listens feels seen. I know that I’ve been comforted by a song or heard lyrics that expressed my feelings better than I ever could, and I hope that at least someone finds that feeling somewhere in my music.”

Talia Grace breaks through very hard topics to bring comfort to listeners with similar experiences, and while doing so, she delivers a beautiful, thoughtful and utterly honest EP.
