Hailing from Sheffield, in the United Kingdom, electronic music artist and producer Cobbler just released his fourth full-length album No One Knows the Question. His music, especially the one heard on his latest release, is a very interesting mix of sounds and influences, blending together the pulsation of electronic music with dream pop undertones and indie rock sensibility.

On his previous work Songs, Delayed Cobbler found himself recreating and revisiting songs written many years ago, but this time No One Knows the Question consists of fresh material. He started working on it soon after the release of Songs, Delayed and it’s interesting to hear how his songwriting and style has matured over the years. This is a deeply personal album for Cobbler, who sounds more vulnerable than ever.

Cobbler wears his heart on his sleeve as he talks about the inspirations behind the songwriting for this album: “There are two main themes which are touched on in a number of the songs: the breakdown of a long-term friendship, and (potentially triggered by this) the overwhelming desire to move away and experience somewhere else“, he says. His love of Sheffield runs through all of his work, and the desire to go somewhere else is made clear on the second track “Wanderlust”.

Across the songs that make up the album, we get to experience a real rollercoaster of raw emotions and Cobbler guides us through all of this with poise and elegance. There are songs that deal with a myriad of thematics such as God and religion, drugs and alchocol, as well as relationships both platonic and romantic. It’s a wild ride and the artist really brings his vulnerable and honest side to the centrefold, making the album an incredibly heartfelt and candid adventure.

The sonic palette explored by Cobbler on No One Knows the Question keeps up with the same sense of melody and wonder that was found on “Songs, Delayed” but this time feels richer and more well-rounded. The artist’s expertise is being able to dive deep into the realm of electronic music as a whole, excelling in both upbeat, danceable tunes as well as in the downtempo, mellower and slower tracks.

There is also so much fun to be had on this album, as highlights “Dinosaurs and Meteors” and “Shitshow” perfectly illustrate. They’re both upbeat and fast tracks, backboned by an adventurous use of indie rock guitars and carefully curated harmonies that instantly create a dynamic and cinematic atmosphere that both sounds and feels as if they’re stadium sized. The contrast between songs such as these and the darkness heard on Chromatics-like “No White Knight” and “Big Sky” makes the album seem like a true cohesive piece of work. Cobbler’s ability to perfectly balance all of the possibilities and boil them down into their emotional core is definitely proof of how remarkable he is as an artist and producer.

I hadn’t sung publicly for years, but now I’m enjoying having my voice back“, he told us while explaining that No One Knows the Question really serves as a continuation of his previous album. “Songs, Delayed was made up of songs written when I was young, whereas this one very much tells the story of where I am now as a person and an artist“, he concludes. No One Knows the Question beams with creativity and bold production choices, showcasing all of his maturity and growth at once.
