Pacific Death – Stealing From the Devil

Do you even guitar, bro? That’s what I’d be saying if I was Sweden’s Pacific Death. This one man project founded in 2021, simply put, shreds. And he plays a Schecter! I’ve always wanted a Schecter. Pacific Death just dropped a new single on April 26th, the title of the track being as epic as the piece itself, called “The Art Of Stealing Tulips From the Devil’s Garden.”

His guitar playing is, in my opinion, a heavier style of Prog than on average. When I think of Prog Rock I tend to think of greats like Jeff Beck and Rush. And don’t get me wrong, Pacific Death still delivers similarly with off time, complex rhythms and tastefully competent guitar licks, but in addition to that, his stylings to my ear have some pretty neat Metal roots too that go hand in hand with the Prog influence.

In this particular song, there are some cool sound card and synth lines that remind me of a lot of “chip tune” music that’s been coming out recently. It’s an interesting arrangement and a meticulously crafted composition. As the title bluntly puts it, the piece is meant to convey the story of a “professional thief,” breaking into the devil’s heavily protected garden.

“The Art of Stealing Tulips From The Devil’s Garden” tallies up to be Pacific Death’s sixth single of the year. With every release he increasingly pushes the boundaries of experimentation between genres, frequencies, and rhythmic complexities. There are several movements throughout the new song.

I would say that I hear Marty Friedman influence, as well as a segment early on that reminds me of something Brian May might play. There are a lot of elements of Power Metal throughout the track as well.

“Bouncy” riffs are dynamically placed to keep the track interesting all the way to the end. When I say “bouncy” riffs, I’m meaning upbeat heavy ones like System of a Down, and in even heavier iterations of the tune, riffing that reminds me of bands like Killswitch Engage. Check it out today and indulge yourself in all that the Devil’s garden has to offer!

“I find it very exiting to explore what other people would never put in a song”
