Australian powerhouse songstress Clare Easdown is known for her unique approach to electronic music, relying on bold production choises and creating an ambient sound that thrives on feeling and emotion. Her latest single, “Sitgma Enigma”, tackles once again the delicate subjet matter of mental health struggles, more especifically the sitgma that surrounds even talking about it.

Clare Easdown is no stranger to the vulnerable and the honest, always writing incredibly personal and intimate lyrics that hit you like a train. On “Stigma Enigma”, of course, is no different as she desperately pleas for compassion, empathy and awareness of the importance of talking about mental health and taking steps towards healing.
In a completely self-written and self-produced track, Clare knows exactly how to captivate the audience with incredibly lush production. With minimal percussion, the song is backbones by a haunting atmosphere crafted from synths and low guitars, resulting in a breath-taking journey.
Her focus on lyrics and feeling is the centrefold, as she sings about feeling alone on her struggles with it and begs for a safe place to escape to. It’s another powerful track by Clare, who never shies away from difficult topics and does it with elegance and sophistication.
As she sings lyrics like “All of you who judge those who are in mental pain, all of you are in fact more insane” we can feel the frustration she’s going through. This is a soft track, but as it goes along you can definitely tell that there are some angry undertones to what she’s saying and she directs that anger towards the people who treat it as unimportant.
The music video that accompanies the track takes a very interesting approach, as it mainly showcases Clare scrolling down on a social media feed and stopping at important points and messages, such as the war in Gaza, until it finally cuts to a livestream. In it, we get old footage of Clare herself at her worst moments of the struggle.
“Looking back at old footage of me insane was hard. What’s harder though is watching those people hit the laugh button when I was clearly unwell. Mental health stigma runs riot. How is losing your mind any different to having a heart attack?“.
The video is simple and yet unsettling, making its point come across in a very direct manner.
“Stigma Enigma” is a dark song, but one that still lets the hope shine in through the track. The hope of feeling understood and cared for, the hope for a world in which no one has to go through what she went through without a support system to back you up. Clare herself also concludes it in the best possible way: “This track seeks to bring awareness to mental illness and highlights how important it is that we judge less and love more“.
