Following the success of her previous The Angels Album back in 2022, Odelet keeps pushing herself towards a more intimate sound that has so much focus on vocals. In fact, the way Odelet makes use of her own voice as one of the main core instruments is absolutely stunning and that can be felt even on the first few seconds of the opening track. “Pisces Pie” is a perfect example of how creative and emotional Odelet is, as she flows alongside a jazz inspired background.
The most interesting part of this album is how seamlessly the tracks seem to flow into one another, creating what feels like a personal journey for the singer. By the time we get to the gorgeous vocal harmonies on fourth track “Paired”, she’s already reeled us in completely into their own universe. There is a captivating quality to her voice and delivery that feels utterly mesmerizing, and her minimalist production does match that energy perfectly.
Across the tracks, Odelet sounds not entirely unlike a softer Fiona Apple especially in the way she uses her voice and bases everything else around it. She crafts intricate melodies that are remarkably dynamic, even when she uses non-conventional song structures and instrumentations. Pisces Pie was entirely produced by the artist herself on a drum machine and keyboard. That process is responsible for the intimacy that can be felt throughout the record, as the singer appears to pour her heart completely.
It’s soft and calm, but it feels as if there’s so much happening in the interlineations – and that comes to show exactly how thoughtful and precise the production was. As Odelet sings about falling in love again in “Cinderella”, one of the singles released from the album previously, we’re not fully sure if that is a good or a bad thing.
It’s deep, emotional and focused on feeling – an album that definitely doesn’t come by very often, mixing so much different elements and influences that come from jazz, hip-hop, trip-hop and soul filtered through her own sense of originality. Pisces Pie is truly a remarkable piece of work and proves Odelet once and for all as an artist with a unique vision and approach to songwriting.
