Nashville-based songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Lawrence Behrs released his first solo single as Orwello last December, and “Golden Gate” caught us delightfully by surprise. Now, the all-around artist is back with brand new original music, in the form of “Sweet Thing”. With just three tracks and in a really short period of time between them, Orwello has already came up with a completely different sound and storytelling style.
It’s incredibly exciting when an artist keeps doing new things, and his new single is another big surprise. Influenced by indie pop melodies and deep house productions, “Sweet Thing” goes so big it’s gigantic. Featuring vocals from Otto Palmborg, the latest release from Orwello moves forward quickly and surely. “Sweet Thing” leaves the sexy and sultriness, trip-hop like inspirations from “Golden Gate” to the side and shifts its focus toward a much more straightforward pop landscape with danceable beats and excellent pacing.
The best part of “Sweet Thing” is, in fact, how it manages to keep up the storytelling and lyrical vulnerability found brilliantly on “Golden Gate”, even if its production goes so hard and fast. Like a love song about miscommunication and misaligned expectations, the song tells the story of someone who’s ready to take a bold step in a relationship but fears to be alone in it.
As Otto sings lines like ‘You keep on walking on my soul, you’re like the Devil yeah you’re pulling my strings‘ and makes metaphors about not knowing where things are going while dancing in the dark, you can definitely feel that sense of frustration that comes when love isn’t being enough but it’s still strong to push you forward.
It’s just good songwriting, fitting in such complex and nuanced emotions into a three-minute pop song is not an easy thing to do. And yet, this guy nails it once again with brilliance and creativity. “Sweet Thing” is a different sound being explored by Orwello to its fullest potential, filled with rich details in both production as well as lyrics. A song that can both get you moving while also leaving you eagerly at the edge of your seat the whole time.
Orwello is proving with single after single that he’s here for it all, and you never know what’s coming next. This is the most exciting thing an artist can do, and he does it with sophistication and style in the most interesting way.
